Week Notes #22

one

Running on empty for weeknotes lately, it’s become hard to mark time when time has become quite a nebulous concept. But, I will persist.

I think this was the week in lockdown where I started to lose it.. I spent my Saturday evening watching Clueless.. wasted about 4 hours on Sunday looking at sleeping bag reviews on YouTube.. and only made it about 7 pages forward in the book i’m reading.

Some incredibly small triumphs: replaced some shoelaces, sorted out all my camping / bikepacking gear and put a couple of bits on eBay, put up my tent in the living room and briefly sat inside it and imagined I was in a forested campsite somewhere. For a moment I could smell pine needles.

I did make it out the house too, and we biked up to Hampstead Heath around lunchtime on Sunday and I managed to sunburn one of my legs pretty good.

Got a message out of the blue from Nik who had opened an old laptop and found a folder full of photos from a road trip we’d taken together in the US five years ago. I think the trip meant a a lot to all three of us – all for different reasons at that point in time – and looking at these photos at a time like this the nostalgia feels amped up to dangerous levels.

But these are definitely some of the photos i’m most happy with from the last five years. There’s about 300 on Flickr here, and one of my favourites below, on the beach at Morro Bay.

four

Week 2 at Loom and i’m starting to settle in, losing the ‘new kid in school’ feeling, but trying to keep the curiosity. Perhaps my biggest contribution so far was creating a Slack channel for podcasts which was well received.

five

Listened to this Desert Island Discs episode with Simon Armitage which was very calming. I’ve also been enjoying the scrappiness of Louis Theroux’s new show.

six

Perhaps inspired by that, and by a poem my mum happened shared with me, I bought a book of Raymond Carver poems.
